Take turns placing stones on a 5 × 5 grid. The tutorial helps you get started, one mechanic at a time.
Make a line of five
Connect five of your stones in any direction to win. If the board fills up first, the player with the most tiles wins.
Watch the weather
In solo play, wind can shift stones, ice can block tiles and lightning can break a line. Leave yourself another option.
Try a different approach
Combine elements or use a power-up to change a tricky board. A move that looked lost might still have a way out.
Find your kind of match
A game to yourself.
Or a match with a friend.
Challenge someone you know
Share a friend code and take turns online. Give each other up to 72 hours to reply, or choose Fast Mode for a 20-second turn clock.
Online uses Classic rules. Weather and Guardian perks sit this one out.
A bit of help when you need it
Boulder Smash, Yeti Freeze and Water Surge can change the board in solo play. You'll get to try power-ups in the tutorial.
Is Kohatu free?
Yes, it's free to download. The game contains ads and optional purchases. You can buy an option to remove banner ads and the ads between matches. Videos that offer an extra reward are always your choice.
Can I play on my own?
Yes. Quick Play and Campaign both let you play against the AI. You can start with the tutorial to learn how the stones, weather and power-ups work.
Does online play have weather too?
Online matches use Classic rules, so weather hazards and Guardian perks don't apply. Choose solo play if you want the changing weather.
Where can I play?
Kohatu is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store, and for Android on Google Play. The store page will tell you whether your device is supported.
How do I report a problem?

Hi, I'm Gavin.
Kohatu started with a little iPhone game I made in 2014 called Tic Tac Glow. I've kept coming back to the idea over the years, with plenty of experiments and a few restarts along the way.
